When Slade returned with a tall glass one-third full, and the promised tissue, Tanner wiped his face and blew his nose, then tasted the tea and said, “Mmm, this is good! ” He drained the glass quickly.

“I presume you’d like more?” Slade got up to refill the glass.

“So what kind of slaw are you making?” Tanner asked when Slade returned.

“It’s already made. It’s chilling in the fridge—blue cheese slaw.”

“Blue cheese slaw?”

“With green olive slices. I like it. I hope you do, too.”

“I like cole slaw. I like blue cheese. I like olives. I never thought of combining them, though. I may have to hire you to come to work for me in my catering service. Did you use blue cheese salad dressing?”

“No. Mayo and lemon juice, with crumbled blue cheese, some grated onion, and the olives.”

“I can’t wait until dinner!”

“Why wait? I’ll give you a sneak preview now.” Slade got up again, returning in a minute with a paper plate containing two forkfuls of the slaw. He was also carrying a fork and a paper napkin. “Try this.”

Tanner took a bite, and his face broke into a wide smile. “Majorly yum,” he pronounced. “I still can’t wait until dinner.”

“Well, you’ll have to wait for the rest. We don’t want to eat it all up now, do we?”

“Is that the ribs I smell?”

“Sure is.”

“They smell good! ”

“They taste good, too. I make them often.”

“You’ve got them cooking already?”

“It’s a slow-cooking recipe.”

“In a Crockpot?”

“No, in the oven, but at a low temperature.”

“So, what do you like to do in your spare time?” Tanner asked.
